Daigo Oyaki Cooking School

Oyaki is a steamed bun made from buckwheat flour and stuffed with seasonal fillings. This snack is thought to have been a way to preserve fresh produce longer and remain popular today.
In the northern Ibaraki area, oyaki were traditionally made by baking the buns in a sunken hearth. Nowadays, Japanese homes don't have hearths, so oyaki are usually steamed or baked in the oven. In addition to traditional combinations of seasonal vegetables, modern oyaki are often stuffed with fruit or sweet red bean paste!
If you'd like to make your own oyaki, head to Daigo Oyaki Cooking School in Daigo! Housed in an old school building from the Meiji Era, it is the perfect setting to try your hand at this traditional Japanese dish. The school also has a shop and restaurant.

Himegataki Apple Orchards

Daigo, located in northwestern Ibaraki Prefecture, thrives in apple cultivation that takes advantage of the area's climate. The apples grown in this region are called Okukuji apples and are packed with juicy sweetness.

Himegataki Apple Orchards, located between the Kuji River and Tsukimachi Falls, is one of the orchards that grows Okukuji apples. The orchards carefully grow multiple apple varieties without the use of chemical fertilizers.

In the autumn, you can enjoy all-you-can-eat apple-picking experiences and savor freshly picked apples filled with sweetness right on the spot. You also have the option to take home your freshly picked apples.

Fukuroda Falls

Fukuroda Falls is ranked among Japan’s "Three Great Waterfalls." A visit here will quickly reveal why. Water cascades over four levels of the rocky cliff face, earning it the nickname "Yondo no Taki" (four times waterfalls).
In autumn, the falls are breathtaking when the fiery foliage transforms the surrounding mountains. But if you can’t make it in autumn, don’t worry! In winter, the waterfall freezes over in a stunning icy spectacle. In the summertime, the cool spray of the rushing water makes them a great place to escape the heat.
The Fukuroda Falls area is where several beginner-friendly hiking trails begin. It's a great way to explore more of northern Ibaraki’s stunning mountains.
If hiking isn’t your thing, head to one of the soba noodle restaurants or souvenir shops at the base of the falls. You can even sample the area’s famous apple pie!
