Cretaceous Rock Formations

These cretaceous rocks stemming from the Mesozoic Era (around 6.5 million years ago) are the first rock formation of their kind to be discovered in Ibaraki. Fossilized ammonites and sharks have even been discovered in the area.

Kasama Nichido Museum of Art

While Kasama is known for its beautiful ceramics, a few museums in the city also exhibit paintings and sculptures. Kasama Nichido Museum of Art opened in 1972 and is one of the foremost institutes.

The Museum was created to provide all people access to inspiring works of art. The collection comprises works by Japanese artists and works by the Impressionists, who influenced the Japanese art. Visitors will be greeted with drawings of renowned artists such as Renoir, Monet, van Gogh, and Degas. There is also a rare exhibition of palettes used by well-known artists, which has been critically acclaimed. There are also sculptures installed in the attractive garden.

Shunpu Banriso

Shunpu Banriso is a 300-square-meter thatched-roof private house that was the residence of Kitaoji Rosanjin, a famous Japanese artist active from the late 19th to mid-20th century in many fields including pottery, calligraphy, and cooking, and was moved from Kita-Kamakura.

Some rooms inside the house were personally designed by Rosanjin. The facility also displays furniture handmade by Rosanjin and his favorite items. The vast garden around is lush with cherry blossoms, azaleas, maples, irises, and many other plants and trees, offering scenery that changes with the seasons.

In addition, a private lunch is served in the Nagayamon (one of the traditional Japanese gates) by reservation only. It is available for one group per day, with a maximum of 7 people. Please call to make a reservation at least two days in advance.
