Hitachinaka Festival & Fireworks

The fireworks display is the highlight of this two-day summer festival. The event features over 3,000 fireworks set to dynamic music that adds to the dazzling display.

In addition to fireworks, the festival features various events, including a dance procession and a traditional mikoshi (portable shrine) parade.

Meiri Shurui Brewing

The yeast used in the brewery process at Meiri Shurui gives their sake a light, fruity aroma without added acidity. The Besshunkan Visitor Brewery explains how sake is made, including complimentary tastings. There's also a shop selling refined sake and plum wine.

Kodokan Mito Domain School

Kodokan was established in 1841 by Nariaki Tokugawa, the ninth feudal lord of the Mito Domain. It was the largest school among the warrior clan and comparable to a university by today's standards. Students could study medicine, pharmacy, astronomy, and martial arts. Japan’s last shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, was educated at the Kodokan for five years from the age of six. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Yoshinobu spent four months confined to a room in Shizendo, part of the Kodokan complex at the time.
