The Tokugawa Museum was established in 1977 by the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation to house objects and writings passed down from the Mito Tokugawa Family. The exhibits were donated by Kuniyuki Tokugawa, the 13th Lord of the Mito Domain.
Approximately 30,000 items in the collection are associated with Tokugawa Ieyasu (Japan’s first shogun), his son Yorifusa Tokugawa, and their families.
The museum also carries the manuscript of "The Great History of Japan" (Dai Nihon-shi) and around 30,000 historical documents used to write the book.
The Tokugawa Museum is the only facility in Japan to house such an extensive collection of materials and objects relating to the lives of Japan’s daimyo (feudal lords. It's well worth a visit if you’d like to discover more about this period in Japan’s history.

Cretaceous Rock Formations

These cretaceous rocks stemming from the Mesozoic Era (around 6.5 million years ago) are the first rock formation of their kind to be discovered in Ibaraki. Fossilized ammonites and sharks have even been discovered in the area.

Sakatsura Isosaki Shrine

Sakatsura Isosaki Shrine, established in 856, is known for bringing fortune in recovery from illness, health, and longevity. Also, many lottery winners have visited the shrine, making it equally famous in recent years for increasing wealth. Oarai Isosaki Shrine, located in the neighboring town of Oarai and famous for its torii gate on the coastal rocks, is its sister shrine. Oarai Isosaki Shrine is dedicated to Okuninushi, the deity who created the nation of Japan. On the other hand, Sakatsura Isosaki Shrine is dedicated to a deity named Sukunabikona, who is said to have collaborated with Okuninushi.

The shrine's charms lie in its beautiful, dense thicket of Japanese bay trees that are over 300 years old and camellias growing on both sides of the shrine road. Lake Senba

Located in the heart of Mito City, Lake Senba is a great place to relax for locals and visitors alike.
The lake is encircled by a 3-kilometer-long walking and jogging route near Kairakuen Garden and the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art. It is the ideal route for a relaxing day of sightseeing. Bicycles and swan-shaped pedal boats are also available to rent. Moreover, there are several cafes on the lakeshore for a coffee or ice cream after your stroll.
Plenty of wildlife can be found around Lake Senba. Koi carp and terrapins inhabit the lake, while swans and other birds are seen swimming along the banks. Around 30 whooper swans make their nests at the lake between mid-October and March each year. Be sure to observe these swans from afar.
