2024.08.22Akeno Sunflower Festival, Chikusei City (August 24 – September 1) Since 2002, the Akeno Sunflower Festival has been a unique spot featuring endless gorgeous sunflowers and expansive views of Mount Tsukuba. During this festival, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of around one million sunflowers spread across this flat 4-hectare field. The site of this vast expanse of colourful flowers is made even more beautiful against the stunning backdrop of Mount Tsukuba, the most famous mountain in Ibaraki Prefecture which is also referred to as the ‘Purple Peak’. Thanks to the flat terrain of the sunflower field, visitors can enjoy spectacular views with gorgeous Mount Tsukuba in the distance all day long and even during sunset. The sunflowers grown here are double-flowered, or ‘Yae Sunflowers,’ which are known for their fluffy and layered petals. After the wheat harvest is completed in late June, the field is borrowed to plant these elegant flowers. They are quite rare—having taken ten years of breeding to develop this unique variety—and only stay in bloom for a very limited time. So this 9-day festival is all the more special as while these sunflowers reach their peak bloom, the field is filled with a beautiful bright yellow. There is also a limited-time flower cutting and wrapping corner, so don’t forget to visit it during your visit to collect your own flowers and bring home a piece of this floral sunshine with you. August 24 – September 1 The sunflower field is open for visits without time restrictions.
