A Two-Day Itinerary Exploring Japanese Culture and Historic Streetscapes

From Ueno Station we'll head for Ibaraki Prefecture's Yuki City via Tochigi Prefecture. This model course allows visitors to experience Japanese culture by wearing a kimono and strolling along historic streetscapes.

Ueno Station

First we'll board the JR Utsunomiya Line Rapid Rabbit Service leaving Ueno Station at 7:55.
Then at Oyama Station (Tochigi Prefecture) we'll transfer to the JR Mito Line. You'll be able to reach Yuki Station in about 90 minutes.Then from Yuki Station you can take a taxi.

Have An Experience Wearing a Yuki Tsumugi Kimono

Let's go for a stroll about town in a traditional silk fabric (Yuki Tsumugi) kimono.

Sawayaka Taxi offers regular taxis, van-style taxis, and wheelchair-accessible taxis, all of which are available for hire on an hourly basis. Pay by the hour and enjoy a more flexible trip. Please enjoy a one-of-a-kind trip where you can go to the places you've always wanted to go, and explore and try some of the activities you've been interested in.

Hands-On Experience
Yuki City : There's an advance reservation plan that's even available on weekdays, and also a same-day reservation plan that's restricted to Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays.
Yuki Entabi : Reservations are now being accepted for the "Authentic Yuki Tsumugi Kimono Experience," a plan organized by a private company.
Recommended Walking Destination
Buyu Sake Brewery : Brewery tours are offered and participants can learn about the region's Japanese sake culture and the sake production process.
Kissa Kajinoki : A cafe inside a 140-year-old former misegura (a building that included a family shop and also a living space). This retro space has a comfortable atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy a meal here.

Spend some special moments in an old folk house cafe created by a sake brewery.

Please enjoy some special moments in a stylish kominka cafe! It's a creation by the sake brewing company, Raifuku Shuzo, who have made full use of the former Omike House—a registered tangible cultural property.

Go for a stroll in and around the Mt. Tsukuba area.

Plans are underway to start renting mountain climbing kimonos at the second floor shop inside BASE877!

With Mt. Tsukuba, the mountain itself is a sacred object, so there are many odd-shaped stones and power spots here.
Tsukuba Shrine sits halfway up the mountain. It is crowded with many pilgrims who come to pray for a suitable marriage partner among other wishes. At an elevation of 877 meters, visitors can enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Kanto Plain from the top of the mountain.
From March of 2024 there are plans to start a rental service for mountain climbing-style kimonos. Please be sure to visit the new shop on the second floor, as well as BASE877 where you can also purchase Mt. Tsukuba limited goods. Also make sure to see their specialty product—shichimi togarashi (seven spice blend), which includes Fukuremikan, an indigenous mandarin orange.

Let's enjoy the 900 varieties of roses and a hands-on nature experience.

Inside the park there's a large area where you can enjoy 900 different rose varieties and seasonal flowers. Then, in addition to various workshops, there's also a rose-themed restaurant, a marketplace, and cafe.
Ibaraki Flower Park's concept is for visitors to enjoy themselves by having some new experiences. They're encouraged to engage all five of their senses by seeing, smelling, tasting, touching, and listening to the flowers for a fun and enriching park experience.

A restaurant surrounded by flowers and greenery in Ibaraki Flower Park, with the theme "An Invitation to a Rose Farm."

This is a lunch spot where guests can taste fresh ingredients grown locally in Ibaraki Prefecture's Yasato area. Yasato's fresh bounty of organic vegetables are transformed into a gorgeous looking "bouquet salad" that is reminiscent of a floral bouquet. Diners can savor this special dish in the restaurant, on the terrace, or at any other spot inside the park.
Whether it's the hill with views of the mountain or a park bench surrounded by beautiful flowers, there are many places where you can savor a delicious meal. So find a place to your liking, then together with family or friends please enjoy a culinary experience that lets you "feel" nature.

Kasama Inari Shrine is one of Japan's three major Inari shrines.
The enshrined deity here is Ukanomitama-no-kami, the guardian deity of industrial development and of fire protection. The shrine was founded in 651 and boasts a history of more than 1,370 years. Many visitors from throughout Japan make a regular pilgrimage here.

A famous shop that has won numerous awards and honors. If you visit during autumn, please be sure to try the sweets filled with Japanese chestnut (waguri)!

The Gruyeres main location also has a cafe. Customers can enjoy delectable cake that was freshly baked in the adjoining factory.
The comfortable and relaxed cafe premises are decorated with display items centered on paintings and Kasama-yaki pottery. So why not take a short break and have a special time here?
The cafe also offers light meals and snacks.

Ushiku Chateau

Visit a facility that represents Japan's wine culture and pick up a bottle of Japanese wine to take home with you!

Ushiku Chateau was established in 1903 and was Japan's first authentic winery. It has also won many awards at international wine competitions.
The winery's red-brick building has been officially recognized as an Industrial Heritage, an Important Cultural Property, and a Japanese Heritage.
Using home-grown grapes, Ushiku Chateau continues to produce wines that offer visitors a rich history and deep flavor. Even today, they make wines with their own grapes, and these wines are also available for purchase.
